Throughout Hanukkah, we insert the passage Al Ha-Nissim into the Amidah and Birkat Ha-Mazon, as a means of reminding God about the miracles performed on behalf of the Maccabees and the Jewish people. However, one the debates in the liturgical development of Al Ha-Nissim was whether or not the passage should both remind God about miracles performed in the past, and beseech God to perform new miracles in the present. This past week, I published an article through the Joint Distribution on the subject, entitled “Al Ha-Nissim: Saved Us Then, Save Us Now,” which I would encourage everyone to read. May this Hanukkah inspire us to remember the miracles brought for our ancestors, and how we might see miracles in our world today. Hag Urim Sameah!
